Back to Basics: Dora Kalff and Erich Neuman’s Phases in Play Therapy in the Sand

This presentation will review Dora Kalff and Erich Neumann’s phases of the play therapy process.

The presenter will provide examples of each play therapy phase in the sand, and participants will create a

tray and identify their own phase in a sandtray creation.

Learning Objectives:

1. List the play therapy phases used by Dora Kalff & Erich Neumann.

2. Describe how the play therapy phases show up in the work of sandtray play therapy. 

3. Utilize sandtray work to identify personal play therapy phases in a sandtray environment.

Cultural Considerations when Working with Mandated Clients in Sandtray Play Therapy 

This experiential training educates clinicians on how to engage mandated clients to include diversity and

culture. This training will explore current trends identified with mandated clients. This training will also

explore how to provide a safe space using sandtray in play therapy as a means to explore their world and

possibly a new beginning. This training will engage clinicians in looking at sandtray in play therapy from a

cultural lens.

Learning objectives:

1. List considerations when engaging with mandated clients so that cultural and diversity areas are effectively included. 

2. Describe current trends that arise when working with mandated clients in sandtray play therapy.

3. Demonstrate how to create a safe & protected space using the guidelines of Dora Kalff in sandtray play therapy.
